Our Leaders – Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe

The United National Party is the party that rendered the most service to this country. The following is the enormous service rendered to this country by the people friendly leaders who were committed to such tasks.

The National Youth Services Council, Belwood Village, National Education Faculty and National Sports meet were initiated during the period Ranil Wickremesinghe held Ministerial portfolio’s and when he was appointed as the Prime Minister in 1993, it was a tremendous support to President D B Wijethunga as well.
When he was re-elected as the Prime Minister in the year 2001 where the economy was in negative territory, the challenges he had to face can be termed as the hardest challenges a head of state in this country has had to face. However, Mr. Wickremesinghe who was an intelligent diplomat, entered in to a Ceasefire agreement in 2002 and started finding solutions to the burning issues in the country one by one.
The electricity supply which had been curtailed was restored where it was provided unhindered 24 hours a day and only 6 months was required to perform this task.
Also through the “Yali Pubudamu Sri Lanka” programme the construction of Expressways, International Ports and Airports commenced during this era. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe revived diplomatic ties with several countries and received a colossal amount of funds as aid to the country.
The Youth Corps was established to mould great youngsters and steps were taken to uplift living conditions of the estate community.
Due to timely measures taken to uplift the agricultural sector, after a long time Sri Lanka was even able to export rice. The Military was also well equipped to face any challenge and the obtaining of the “Courageous” war ship was one such example.
